United Arab Emirates : DP WORLD: New Container Terminal 3 at JEBEL ALI on the right track.
The venture has moved further with its receipt of 5 new quay cranes, while trial runs on 50% of its 19 automated cranes has already been started prior to the commencement of first operations within the next couple of weeks.
After the new terminal with capacity of 4 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) starts complete operation, it will be the biggest semi-automatic facility of the globe.
The Vice president and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai - Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has launched the Terminal 3 in January, and since then, it has witnessed a range of developments.
So far more than 50% of its 1,860 meter long quay is complete and the 5 new ship-to-shore quay cranes (STS), which arrived this week from Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) of Shanghai, will enter into earlier fleet of 4 cranes.
These 4 cranes were set up in December last year.
Overall 20 automated rail mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes are also making movements on their rails at the yard which covers an area of 70 hectare.
After the accomplishment of the project, the terminal will have 19 of the biggest and most sophisticated quay cranes, with remote function capability via an advanced control room by Emirati citizens, comprising first ever introduction of female staff. They will also comprise nearly all of the 50 ARMG crane operations team.
The SVP & MD of DP World UAE Region - Mohammed Al-Muallem opined, Our new world-class Container Terminal 3 will be the most modern and smartest terminal in the region.
He further said, The new cranes and the new terminal will strengthen Jebel Ali s position as the most efficient and modern gateway in the region with the capability to handle the largest giant vessels being ordered by our customers.
The Chief Operations Officer of DP World (UAE Region) Mohammed Ali Ahmed stated, Jebel Ali provides gateway access to a market of more than 2 billion people across the GCC, Middle East, Africa and the subcontinent.
