Byline: Gary Smith GMB Scotland, Secretary

Union chief Opponents are in denial Gary Smith GMB Scotland, Secretary Tomorrow in the House of Commons it's likely that a clear majority of MPs will vote for the renewal of Trident.

This is good news for Scottish jobs, Scottish workers and Scottish communities.

GMB Scotland knows Trident is a divisive issue but those posturing against renewal are in denial - denial of the fact the Tories won the general election, denial of the fact here is a parliamentary majority supporting renewal, and denial of the fact public opinion consistently opposes unilateral nuclear disarmament.

As others play political games, the realists among us in Scotland have been getting on with standing up for people who undertake this valuable and muchneeded work - the workers across the yards and factories that maintain the existing deterrent and will manufacture the renewal programme.

Faslane, Coulport, Rosyth and, by extension, the Upper Clyde, will benefit if the Tories stick to their previous commitments, but there are no guarantees. History has shown we must be vigilant. Given half a chance, the Tories will take jobs promised to Scotland back to their political base south of the border and we should be in no doubt that there are plenty of other locations and workplaces crying out for this work.

The political establishment in Scotland continues to use Trident renewal and the workers whose livelihoods depend on it as a political football.

But their actions have consequences and there is now a clear and present danger of these good, highly-skilled, sustainable jobs being lost for Scottish workers.

GMB Scotland believe the choice is clear and we will continue doing what we do best - fighting for a secure future for our members, their families and communities across our country.
