Union accuses council of playing dirty.

UNITE regional secretary Gerard Coyne accused the council of playing dirty by leaking wage figures that had 'no reality' in what the majority of binmen earn.

"I would like to see the facts and figures behind this wage, as if it was the case for most workers, they would not be in a dispute," said Mr Coyne.

"They would not be bothered about pounds 4,000 if they were earning pounds 45,000.

"If an exceptional few have earned that, it is due to a lot of overtime that they have been asked to do by their managers, and that will be because the council has had a recruitment freeze, meaning less people in the service to do the job.

"The reality is we have workers who are threatened with losing their houses who are struggling to make ends meet.

"The council is attempting to slur people in a genuinely difficult situation."
