Uni set to stage 10th jazz festival.

THE GREAT North Big Band Jazz Festival is set to take place at the University of Sunderland this weekend. The 10th annual event will begin with a concert at 8pm tonight at the university's St Peter's campus.

This will include the first performance of new big band work composed by Leeds-based musician James Hamilton and commissioned by Jazz North.

Tomorrow, 12 big bands from throughout the UK will take part in the festival competition, with Durham University Big Band hoping to become the first to claim the title three times.

And on Sunday morning, a workshop will be led by festival director Bill Watson along with a team of tutors.
