Undie world.

IT'S Valentine's Day in a fortnight and many men's thoughts will be turning to, well, if not love, then visions of lacy lingerie along with boxes of chocolates and bouquets of red roses for the woman in their life. But buying underwear for a loved one can be a trial for blokes. Women tend to have a better idea what their men would want them to wear - and also what will look good even if they're not in model shape.

There's plenty to chose from, such as bra and knicker sets plus slips, silky pyjamas, negligees, corsets, suspender belts, seductive lace babydolls and shape-hugging bodies.

Though there's still icy weather around, fashion is looking forward to spring, with pale colours - pink, nude or ice-blue - and soft pastels already making their mark. Many men, however, will plump for blacks, reds, plus rich plums and royal purples. What marks these pieces out as special, rather than everyday wear, is added bows, pearls or sequins, extra silk, satin or lace.

The look back to vintage clothing has also sparked an interest in structured underwear, with conical bras and high waist briefs seen on sale - though steer clear of anything marked "extra support."

Men tend to think allure over comfort when it comes to choosing lingerie, say experts. They even feel slightly guilty wandering through underwear departments, which is why some stores, including specialist shops, hold special men-only sessions in the run-up to Valentine's Day.

La Senza has a wide range of tantalising lingerie and nightwear to fall in love with. Its range goes up to 40GG in many styles, and there are lingerie advisors on hand to offer advice and free gift wrapping.

So for men out there, here's how to choose the perfect lingerie for her:. Pay attention to what she wears. The clues are in her wardrobe and knicker drawer. On the obvious theory women buy underwear they want to wear, have a good snoop around both from a design and colour point of view - don't go for racy red if she prefers soft pinks. Check out the bra label for the size she normally wears and where she usually buys her bras, as staff in shops such as La Senza will be able to judge what in their own range will fit. Don't go for thongs if she never wears them and prefers larger briefs. You could always ask for advice from her mum, sister or best friend - just make clear first why you're asking!
