Ubuntu launches platform for smartphones.

JOHANNESBURG (CyHAN)- Canonical Ltd. has announced the launch of desktop operating system Ubuntu as a platform for smartphones.

The new smartphone operating system has yet to announce any of its own mobile devices but has hopes that Ubuntu loaded devices will ship early 2014.

"Canonical today announced a distinctive smartphone interface for its popular operating system, Ubuntu, using all four edges of the screen for a more immersive experience," a press release announced.

Canonical states Ubuntu will have an advantage over other smartphone platforms as it will be able to fully offer a smartphone experience or a full desktop experience when docked.

"We expect Ubuntu to be popular in the enterprise market, enabling customers to provision a single secure device for all PC, thin client and phone functions. Ubuntu is already the most widely used Linux enterprise desktop, with customers in a wide range of sectors focused on security, cost and manageability" said Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical.

Ubuntu for smartphones will operate without the need for any buttons and will solely rely on swipes from all four edges of the screen.

"Thumb gestures from all four edges of the screen enable users to find content and switch between apps faster than other phones," the release described.

"We also see an opportunity in basic smartphones that are used for the phone, SMS, web and email, where Ubuntu outperforms thanks to its native core apps and stylish presentation," said Silber.

It has been announced that a build of the operating system will be soon released for Galaxy Nexus devices.

We are defining a new era of convergence in technology, with one unified operating system that underpins cloud computing, data centers, PCs and consumer electronics" says Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and VP Products at Canonical.

Canonical is a private company owned by South African Mark Shuttleworth which supports Ubuntu.
