MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2004

New Ubicom Hardware and Software Platform Enables OEMs and ODMs to

Quickly Deliver Fast, Secure Wireless Routers to

Gaming Enthusiasts and VoIP Consumers

Ubicom(TM), Inc., a leading provider of wireless network processor and software platforms, today announced a complete platform for OEMs and ODMs to quickly and affordably bring to market a fast, secure wireless broadband router for gaming enthusiasts. Based upon Ubicom's high-performance IP3023(TM) wireless network processor and software platform and its innovative Gamer QoS(TM) technology, the 802.11a/b/g gaming router solution overcomes the barrier to real-time broadband streaming of gaming, audio, and video data.

"Consumers today expect fast response times when playing multiplayer Internet games, as well as glitch-free radio, voice over IP (VoIP) and video conferencing," said Glenn Schuster, vice president of marketing for Ubicom. "Add to that basic Internet, email processing and file sharing, and today's wireless routers cannot handle the load efficiently -- our solution solves that problem."

The gaming router solution features Internet game acceleration that is over five times faster(1) on game response times than traditional routers, giving the game player a competitive edge during head-to-head matches. With its high-speed network address translation (NAT) firewall, the router boasts a throughput of over 90 Mbps. "This is serious game acceleration that enthusiasts will want to get their hands on right away," Schuster added.

The NAT firewall also has benefits for the file sharing enthusiast. With its performance boost, and massive translation tables, users can access thousands of file sharing connections.

Designed for Performance

Ubicom achieves this speed and interactivity with a processor and software platform that has been designed specifically for wireless network applications. The Ubicom IP3023 wireless network processor has been proven to deliver two to three times the performance of competitively priced ARM(R)- and MIPS(R)-based system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. When Ubicom's innovative Gamer QoS technology is added to its real-time ipOS(TM) operating system, the combination enables a gaming router that improves response times by delivering dramatically lower latency over a broadband connection.

Features to Enable Printing and Security

In addition to its lightning speed, the gaming router solution supports most major 802.11a/b/g radio modes including Atheros' Super A/G(TM) and Conexant's PRISM Nitro(TM) modes. It also includes a USB print server that removes the need for an "always on" dedicated PC for printing.

Finally, the gaming router solution is also designed for security. Special security features include a stateful packet inspection firewall, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), VPN pass-through, wired equivalent privacy (WEP), a demilitarized zone and MAC address authentication.

Ubicom is the first company to offer a complete development platform to OEMs and ODMs that makes it fast and easy to bring competitive, feature-rich gaming products to market. Ubicom's 802.11a/b/g gaming router solution will be available as part of the IP3000 Software Development Kit (SDK), v6.3 release. Solutions are being demonstrated in a private suite this week during Computex 2004 in Taipei. To arrange a private demonstration, contact your local sales representative. Sampling is available in June. For more information on Ubicom solutions, please visit

About Ubicom's Wireless Network Processor and Software Platforms

Ubicom's industry-leading price performance is enabled by a patent-pending architecture designed for real-time tasks and low latency. The IP3023 processor and Ubicom's ipOS network operating system can process packets twice as fast as typical solutions, dramatically improving response times for games, voice, and other interactive applications. As a result, the IP3023 can support multiple clients and functions without suffering the performance degradation that occurs with other platforms. The platform also uses patented design techniques to enable the high-performance execution of software I/O -- a technique that implements all communications and control functions in software. Software I/O helps eliminate costly dedicated hardware I/O which typically comprises up to 75 percent of the SoC's die area. Additional architectural efficiencies reduce the amount of external memory required by as much as 95 percent, for further cost savings.
