UTILITY WORKERS UNION OF AMERICA HOLDS DEMONSTRATION AT DETROIT EDISON
 SHAREHOLDERS MEETING
DEARBORN, Mich., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Utility Workers Union of America Local 223, AFL-CIO:
George Manoogian, president of Utility Workers Union of America Local 223, has called upon union members, retirees, family and supporters to join the union's demonstration of solidarity at the Detroit Edison shareholders meeting on Monday, April 27. The annual shareholders meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at the company's headquarters, 2000 Second Ave., Detroit. The union has scheduled an informational picket line and a news conference at 9 a.m. to coincide with the shareholders meeting.
Under the banner, "All of 'U' in '92," Local 223 leaders and members are fighting a concessionary contract offer put forth at the bargaining table by Detroit Edison on April 14. "This agenda of cuts and forced workplace change is hard for Local 223 members to understand, let alone accept," according to President Manoogian. "It doesn't make sense to workers who have made a utility profitable, who have attempted to improve their workplaces, to find that they are targeted for unjustified economic concessions and insulting contract changes."
Local 223 is conducting a campaign against the company's negative bargaining stance, and will continue to do so in the coming months until a new contract is signed. "The problem is not the work force, it lies within Detroit Edison's mismanagement," said President Manoogian. "We will take as long as we need to ensure that Local 223 members and their families are protected by a contract that they can respect." Local 223 represents nearly 3,000 workers at Detroit Edison.
