UTILICORP DIVISION FILES FOR RATE INCREASE
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- UtiliCorp United

(NYSE: UCU) today announced that its Kansas Public Service division has filed a request with the Kansas Corporation Commission to increase its natural gas rates.
Kansas Public Service, based in Lawrence, Kan., filed for a $1.28 million increase in annual gas revenues, citing the need to offset costs of gas line replacements. This is an overall increase of 9.4 percent and would raise the monthly bill of a residential customer using 10,000 cubic feet of gas by approximately $4.61.
Kansas Public Service President William C. Salome, III said, "Since the beginning of 1990, KPS has invested more than $5.1 million in its distribution system and the rate of investment in facilities is expected to remain high during the next five years." KPS is in the process of replacing the unprotected bare steel and cast iron sections of its distribution system.
Although a request has been filed for a rate increase, the overall levels of the rate increase will be about the same as those charged during the winter heating season of 1982-1983.
Based in Kansas City, UtiliCorp provides electricity and natural gas service to nearly one million customers in eight states and the province of British Columbia. The company also is engaged in various non- regulated energy and utility related enterprises.
