UTILICORP'S PEOPLES NATURAL GAS DIVISION REQUESTS IOWA RATE INCREASE

UTILICORP'S PEOPLES NATURAL GAS DIVISION REQUESTS IOWA RATE INCREASE
KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Peoples Natural Gas division of UtiliCorp United (NYSE: UCU) will file for a rate increase in Iowa totaling $4.8 million, or 4.6 percent, in annual revenue.
The proposed increase, to be filed with the Iowa Utilities Board May 4, is the first rate increase requested by Peoples in Iowa since 1986. The new rates will mean an average monthly increase of $2 for residential customers. The proposed increase will be used to offset increases in operating and facility costs since the last rate request.
"Peoples' current rates are based on 1985 costs and since then inflation has gone up more than 26 percent," said James M. McClymond, president of the division. "We have worked hard to find ways to increase efficiencies, control costs and avoid a rate increase. We continually examine operating costs for ways to save money. Our success in that area is one of the reasons we haven't had a rate increase in six years."
Even with the proposed increase, Peoples customers in Iowa will still be paying 2 percent less for natural gas service than they did in 1986.
In accordance with Iowa law, Peoples will begin charging the new rates on an interim basis, subject to refund, as soon as authorized by the Iowa Utilities Board. If the final rates are lower than the interim rates, Peoples will refund the difference, with interest, to customers.
Peoples delivers natural gas to 127,000 homes, businesses and industries in 132 Iowa communities and a total of 343,000 customers in nearly 330 communities in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas.
Based in Kansas City, UtiliCorp provides gas and electric service to nearly one million customers in eight states and the province of British Columbia. The company also is engaged in various non-regulated energy and utility related enterprises.
