USWA ANNOUNCES BREAKOFF IN TALKS WITH USX

PITTSBURGH, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) today announced that the Union and USX Corp. (NYSE: X) have decided to break off the current round of early negotiations.
In a statement, union Chairman Andrew V. Palm described the bargaining as open and constructive.
"We had a good discussion of the issues," he said, "and explored some of the most innovative proposals ever advanced in collective bargaining in the steel industry.
"Unfortunately, and despite a lot of hard effort, we were not able to reach agreement on the 12 issues that comprise the Union's 'New Directions' approach. Whether it's now or next year when the contract expires, no agreement is possible without resolution of these issues."
In the meantime, bargaining continues with Inland Steel, National Steel and Bethlehem Steel. "I suspect efforts at one or more of these tables are now likely to intensify," Palm concluded.
