USWA AND ARMCO STEEL EXTEND CONTRACT

 PITTSBURGH, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Armco Steel Company and the United Steelworkers of America agreed today to extend the terms and conditions of their existing labor contract. The contract, covering approximately 1,400 active and 800 laid off hourly production employees at ASC's Ashland, Ky., plant, was to expire at midnight Saturday, July 31.
 Armco Steel Company and the USWA said talks on a new agreement would resume Thursday, August 12, in Pittsburgh. Armco Steel said production, maintenance and customer shipments at the plant would continue under normal schedules.
 Headquartered in Middletown, Armco Steel Company is a 50/50 joint venture between Armco Inc. (NYSE: AS), Parsippany, N.J., and Kawasaki Steel Corporation, Tokyo. The company produces carbon flat-rolled carbon steel for automotive, appliance, construction, manufacturing and distribution markets. The company employs about 6,000 in plants in Middletown, Ohio, and Ashland, Ky.
