USWA: RALLY SCHEDULED FOR LOCKED-OUT WORKERS AT NORTHERN UTILITIES

PORTSMOUTH, N.H., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) today announced it has scheduled a community solidarity rally for the locked-out gas workers of USWA Local 14930 at the Portsmouth division of Northern Utilities, Monday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
Frank Northrup, Local 14930 president, announced that more than a dozen state legislators have committed to participate to demonstrate their support for the locked out workers, who are seeking the company's response to an appeal for ending the lockout and negotiating a labor agreement that can be approved by the members.
According to Northrop, state Rep. Rick Trombley, Democratic leader for the House legislature, will be joined by Mark McKenzie, president of the New Hampshire AFL-CIO in speaking to the union members and their families at the rally.
"Nearly every state legislator in the Portsmouth area has said they will join us in our community solidarity rally," Northrup declared, "including state Sens. Bert Cohen, Beverley Holingworth and Jeanne Shaheen."
The local union president also noted that the company's lockout action following efforts by the union to continue negotiations past the expiration has forced the union to take a new look at issues such as rate increase requests by Northern Utilities. "We're going to look after the public's interest, as well as our members," Northrup said.
