USWA: UNION HAS NOT BROKEN OFF TALKS WITH GENEVA STEEL; UNION IS WILLING TO MEET ANY TIME

GENEVA, Utah, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) today denied a claim by Geneva Steel (NYSE: GNV) alleging that the union had broken off contract talks.
"The fact is we are ready and willing to negotiate anytime, anywhere," said Robert Petris, director of USWA District 38 and chairman of the union's negotiating committee.
Petris said a statement by Joe Cannon, chief executive officer of Geneva Steel, which said the USWA had broken off negotiations "is simply not true."
"What the union did do was refuse to counter a proposal made by Geneva that was wholly inadequate and virtually unchanged from its previous position," Petris said. "We told Geneva that we remained willing to meet, and meet at any time, if the company wished to continue discussions.
"Unfortunately, the company chose to hold its meetings with the news media instead of the union, presumably in hopes that it can continue to pay Utah Steelworkers much less than Steelworkers in the rest of the United States are paid."
The USWA represents 2,100 workers at Geneva Steel, whose current contract expires Aug. 31.
