USWA: STEELWORKERS APPROVE NEW 31-MONTH CONTRACT WITH WHEELING-PITT STEEL

PITTSBURGH, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) employed by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. (NYSE: WHX) voted today to approve a new 31-month contract that guarantees employment security, improves wages and benefits, provides bonuses and creates a fund to pay for retiree insurance, the union announced.
The vote, by secret mail ballot, was 3,082 to 912.
The contract, which runs from March 1, 1994, until October 1, 1996, was settled on March 3 following a two-day strike.
"This contract benefits both the workers and the company," said Jim Bowen, the union's chief negotiator and Director of USWA District 23 in Wheeling, WVA. "It's unfortunate the company forced a strike, brief as it was, before agreeing to a settlement it could have had without a work stoppage. Our goal now is to continue the improvement in the company's performance that both sides have worked for, and to which our members have contributed so much."
 The contract's highlights include:
-- A total of $2,250 in guaranteed lump sum bonuses.
-- An additional potential bonus of up to $500 if the company's profits reach $70 million in 1995.
-- Two, across-the-board wage increases of 50 cents per hour, the first effective Sept. 25, 1994, and the second on Dec. 31, 1995.
-- No layoffs during the life of the agreement except in case of a disaster.
 -- One additional holiday.
-- Improved health care coverage for active workers.
-- Establishment of a dedicated fund to protect retiree health and life insurance benefits.
-- Company payment of 50 percent of optional major medical premiums for retirees.
