USWA: GOAL IS TO REACH AN EQUITABLE CONTRACT AT BAYOU STEEL NOT TO DESTROY THE COMPANY AS BAYOU CLAIMS

FAIRFIELD, Ala., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The purpose of implementing an extensive corporate or contract campaign against Bayou Steel Company (NYSE: BYX) in LaPlace, La., is to bring about meaningful collective bargaining resulting in an agreement USWA members can accept, the union said today.
"Bayou's media release contains misinformation about the Steelworkers union, about its role in the collective bargaining process, and about the work stoppage which began March 21," said Richard Davis, interim director of USWA District 36 here. "We have one goal -- to get an acceptable contract for our members. A company that maintains it can be a `long term viable employer' only by taking away wages, benefits and job security from its employees, by unlawful means, is not a responsible corporate citizen."
According to the union, the reaction of Bayou to the USWA's announcement of a contract campaign seems to border on hysteria and ignores the simple fact that "The Union" to which they refer is the employees of Bayou Steel. The members of USWA Local 9121 are employees of Bayou Steel. The central issue is not the demands by the union, rather it is the company's refusal to bargain in good faith.
"We are pleased that the company has agreed to meet with the governor of Louisiana and with the union representing Bayou Steel employees," Davis said. "And we are pleased that a collective bargaining session has been scheduled for next week. Our goal hasn't changed. We wish to obtain a fair collective bargaining agreement, and we will continue to pursue that goal one-day-longer than the company's efforts to frustrate our objective."
