USW NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE APPROVES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT AT RYERSON

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A negotiating committee of 11 local union leaders unanimously approved on Saturday a recommendation that members of the United Steelworkers of America (USW) ratify the tentative agreement reached with Joseph T. Ryerson & Son Inc. in a secret ballot vote to be held on Feb. 12.
Buddy W. Davis, director, USW District 34 in St. Louis and chairman of the union negotiations, said details of the agreement will be made available later this week after the 480 union members employed at 11 steel service center plants receive summaries of the proposal by mail.
"The proposed agreement will keep the USW-organized Ryerson steelworkers among those with the best wages and benefits in the steel supply industry," Davis said. The union committee unanimously approved this proposal, following their unanimous rejection of a previous offer last Aug. 1, that was concessionary.
Despite threats by the company to hire replacement workers in the event of a strike, the union members also rejected Ryerson's final offer and established a coalition of six international unions in a national coordinated campaign that brought about a round of informal talks between the USW and the company last December. A tentative agreement was then announced on Jan. 11.
Both the USW committee and Ryerson management jointly met in St. Louis to review the proposed contract terms over the weekend. "We see this tentative agreement as a fresh start to keep Ryerson and its workforce as a world class competitor," Davis asserted. If approved by the members, the new agreement would become effective Aug. 1, 1992, to Aug. 1, 1996. USW represented plants are in Boston; Wallingford, Conn.; Philadelphia; Carnegie, Pa.; Cleveland; Charlotte; Cincinnati, Houston; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; and Kansas City, Mo.
