USW MEMBERSHIP TO MEET TO DISCUSS ANNOUNCED CLOSING OF ARMCO FACILITY

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of Local 1049 of the United Steelworkers of America will meet Thursday, Jan. 21, to discuss steps they may take to prevent the closing of the Bowman Metal Deck Division of Armco Inc. in Heidelberg, Pa.
The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Heidelberg fire hall, located at First and Ellworth.
Although the company announced publicly that it planned to close the facility, it has told the union it is open to suggestions that may keep the plant open. The two sides have met four times in the past month, the union said.
Anthony Rainaldi, director of USW District 20, said the union is at a loss to determine what Armco is seeking because the company has not made any specific requests.
"We certainly will examine any reasonable proposals to keep this plant operating and to save the jobs of our 80 members and the non-union personnel who are employed here," Rainaldi said. "But we need some input from the company.
"I hope the meetings we have had have not been merely window-dressing as a prelude to the company's walking away from this community. This plant and its workers have a long history here with the former owners, Cyclops, and I find it unfathomable that Armco would simply give up the ghost. On the other hand, we've seen how the corporate culture has changed since Tom Graham became head of Armco Steel last year.
"Nonetheless, we're going to continue making every effort we can to keep this operation alive."
