USW: RYERSON'S 'BEST DEAL' IS A RAW DEAL FOR WORKERS
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America

(USWA) and Buddy Davis, director of USWA District 34 and chairman of the USWA/Ryerson negotiating committee, called Ryerson's claim of "best deal" a raw deal for workers.
Ryerson is attempting to gain a competitive advantage by demanding concessions from its workers, who currently make the company profitably competitive, the USWA charged today. Operating profits are 40 percent higher than they were for the same quarter last year, the union said.
The Ryerson proposal will be voted on by secret ballot at membership meetings on Aug. 7. Ryerson, a steel warehousing and shipping operation, employs 480 USWA members at 11 locations.
"The company's cost sharing of medical insurance premiums, deductibles and co-payments is really cost shifting of health care costs to employees," Davis said. "Ryerson's health care costs have been rising less than the average for other companies in America.
"It is hardly 'standard,' as the company puts it, to cut costs by deceiving and cheating the workers," Davis continued. "Ryerson's proposal is not just cost sharing, it slashes coverage. Clearly for workers, it is a raw deal. That is why the USWA negotiating committee unanimously recommended a 'no-vote' on Ryerson's offer."
The USWA represents workers at Ryerson facilities in Allston, Mass.; Philadelphia; Carnegie, Pa.; Cleveland; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; Houston; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; North Kansas City, Mo.; and Wallingford, Conn.
