USW: MEMBERS OVERWHELMINGLY REJECT RYERSON 'RAW' DEAL
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- United Steelworkers of America

(USW) members employed by J.T. Ryerson and Sons, Inc. rejected the company's latest contract offer by a vote of 376 to 59.
The previous contract expired July 31, but was extended for seven days so that USW members could review the offer and cast their votes.
The Ryerson proposal was voted down by secret ballot at membership meetings at 11 locations on Aug. 7. Ryerson, a steel service center, employs 480 USW members.
Buddy Davis, director of USW District 34 and chairman of the USW/Ryerson negotiating committee, said:
"Ryerson's workers helped the company remain profitable during these tough times. And yet Ryerson wanted to reward its employees by freezing wages and slashing their health care.
They rejected Ryerson's offer despite the fact that management held captive meetings taking workers off the job and encouraging them to vote yes.
Our members are sending Ryerson a message. The workers will not accept a raw deal. They want fair treatment -- a contract that respects the work they do, not strips them of their dignity. We urge Ryerson to join with us in serious negotiations to produce an agreement that meets our members' needs."
The Ryerson proposal to the USW called for no wage increases for three years, cost-shifting of health care premiums that could cost Steelworkers more than $2,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, increased medical insurance co-payment cost for current and future retirees, elimination of some medical insurance, drastic cuts in dental coverage, two-tier wages, and no pension improvements.
The USW represents workers at Ryerson facilities in Allston, Mass.; Philadelphia; Carnegie, Pa.; Cleveland; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; Houston; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; North Kansas City, Mo.; and Wallingford, Conn.
