UST VIGOROUSLY OPPOSES PROPOSED TAX INCREASE

GREENWICH, Conn., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- UST vigorously opposes the Clinton administration's proposed increase in the federal tax on all tobacco products including moist snuff. The Health Security Act, introduced yesterday, would increase the rate on moist snuff from 36 cents per pound to $12.86 per pound, an almost 3,500 percent increase.
The company is supportive of many of the goals of health care reform. However, since any increase in the federal smokeless tobacco excise tax will raise an insignificant amount of revenue compared to the estimated $331 billion cost of the reform proposal, it is punitive and shortsighted to single out the smokeless tobacco industry for unfair treatment.
The debate over this health care proposal and other alternatives will go on for many months both in the Congress and among the American people. The company is confident that many in Congress who support the free enterprise system will take a more reasoned and balanced approach to the funding of health care reform.
UST, through its subsidiaries, is a leading producer and marketer of moist smokeless tobacco products, including Copenhagen, Skoal, Skoal Long Cut and Skoal Bandits. Other consumer products marketed by UST subsidiaries include premium wines sold nationally through the Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest, Conn Creek and Villa Mt. Eden wineries.
