LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB) and Thomson Consumer Electronics/RCA announced it will work with Sears Brand Central in April, to develop the national market for DSS(TM) (Digital Satellite System(TM)) programming. Sears Brand Central departments, in about 800 multi-line Sears Stores will offer USSB DSS subscription program packages in addition to RCA DSS home receiver hardware.
The agreement gives USSB its first national DSS distribution partner, and gives Sears a dynamic hardware/programming combination package to offer consumers beginning in April, 1994 when USSB DSS service becomes available for home broadcast. As an authorized RCA DSS dealer, Sears will also offer professional home installation and service for RCA DSS equipment.
"The Sears commitment to a well-trained, knowledgeable retail sales force in its Sears Brand Central departments makes the company a true model for the kind of retailer that RCA and USSB are seeking to help introduce DSS," said Stanley E. Hubbard, president and chief operating officer, USSB. "RCA will provide in-depth sales training for 5,000 Sears Brand Central sales associates to help them fully understand DSS and USSB programming. RCA and USSB will make the same kind of commitment to other consumer electronics retailers carrying DSS.
"This will help USSB take the lead in setting the retail stage for the national introduction of DSS digital broadcast TV," said Hubbard. "We are thrilled to be associated with such a quality, experienced retailer as Sears in bringing the DSS television revolution to U.S. households."
Frank J. Biondi, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Viacom International Inc., owner of Showtime Networks Inc. and MTV Networks, said, "In working with USSB, our goal has been to make our programming potentially available to every consumer. The addition of a major consumer electronics retailer like Sears to this effort is a giant step toward that objective."
"The Sears endorsement establishes instant credibility for DSS and USSB's programming lineup," said Larry Carlson, president, HBO Satellite Services. "With Sears sales savvy and retailing network, DSS is sure to be an instant hit."
"This agreement further supports our strategy of offering consumers easy, one-stop retail shopping for both hardware and programming to develop the DSS market," said Hubbard. "We look forward to working with Sears to implement DSS -- and we also look forward to working with all retailers who want to be a part of this exciting new retail program."
USSB has put together some of the biggest names in television for its national DSS programming package, including the multichannel programming of SHOWTIME, HBO, Cinemax, The Movie Channel and Flix. USSB will also offer programming from Lifetime, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon/Nick At Nite, MTV, VH-1 and All News Channel, through its Direct Broadcast Satellite service beginning in April, 1994. Digital satellite television technology produces CD quality sound and laser disc quality pictures.
USSB is a subsidiary of Twin Cities-based Hubbard Broadcasting, one of the nation's pioneer broadcasting companies and owner of nine TV stations, two radio stations, two TV production companies and Conus Communications, which introduced satellite news-gathering to the broadcasting industry in 1984 and produces All News Channel in partnership with Viacom International Inc. In cooperation with DirecTv(TM), a subsidiary of GM Hughes Electronics Corporation and provider of a complementary DSS programming service, USSB and RCA will roll out the nation's first Direct Broadcast Satellite service in 1994.
