USS-POSCO SET TO HIKE PRODUCT QUALITY AGAIN
WITH $4 MILLION INVESTMENT IN NEW EQUIPMENT
PITTSBURG, Calif., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The quality of finished steel produced by USS-POSCO Industries (UPI), greatly aided by the company's $450-million modernization program, will soon get another major boost with the $4 million addition of a sophisticated tension leveling system to the company's hot dip galvanizing facilities.
The new equipment is being purchased from Wean Industries at a cost of approximately $2 million, and UPI will invest another $2 million on installation and training. UPI projects the new equipment will go into operation in October 1993.
"The name of the game in the steel industry today is 'quality,' and we are looking forward to producing galvanized steel with the uniformity and flatness that our customers demand today," said UPI president Leonard H. Chuderewicz.
Galvanized steel, recognizable for its distinctive spangled appearance, is primarily used by the construction industry in the form of wall studs, rain gutters, highway culvert and decking. The product is highly resistant to corrosion due to a coating of zinc which is applied over cold roll steel in the final step of the production process.
UPI's new tension leveling system will have the capacity to level steel with thicknesses of 0.017 inches to 0.138 inches at widths from 24 inches to 54 inches, and allows the company to provide customers with galvanized steel that is uniform in gauge and extremely flat.
R.J. Wean III, president of Wean Industries, said, "This project demonstrates USS-POSCO's commitment to its customers. Today, there is constantly increasing emphasis on rigid quality standards for flat-rolled steel strip products, especially galvanized steels. USS-POSCO is making this capital investment in the most advanced tension leveling technology on the market in order to meet the most demanding specifications."
Wean Industries, a division of Wean Inc. (NYSE: WID), is a leading producer of equipment for processing flat-rolled metals, tubular and bar products, rubber and plastics. Wean Industries recently has supplied a number of tension-leveling systems for galvanizing lines in the United States, China and the Republic of Korea.
USS-POSCO Industries is a California general partnership, the partners of which are Pitcal Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of USX Corp. (formerly U.S. Steel) (NYSE: X) and POSCO-California Corp., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. of the Republic of Korea.
