USS-POSCO BECOMES FIRST AMERICAN STEEL COMPANY
TO RECEIVE CAMPBELL SOUP'S HIGHEST QUALITY AWARD
PITTSBURG, Calif., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- USS-POSCO Industries, California's largest steel maker, announced today that it has become the first American steel producer to be named a "Select Supplier" by Campbell Soup Co.
According to Bob Bottel, director of Quality for Campbell, North America, USS-POSCO was named a Select Supplier because it has demonstrated that it can deliver high quality steel products on a consistent basis and that it has a continuing commitment to improved performance. He added that only 6 percent of Campbell's more than 3,500 suppliers worldwide have achieved this status.
"This is truly an achievement," said Len Chuderewicz, USS-POSCO president. "One of the goals of the modernization project was to achieve quality levels unsurpassed in the industry today. Earning this award recognizes that we are doing just that and it's an honor; but we also recognize that we have to stay committed to maintaining the level of quality that earned us the award."
For Campbell Soup Co., bestowing the status of Select Supplier on its suppliers means that Campbell's is receiving quality products they can trust. Benefits include reduction of prices, fewer redundant inspections, improved line efficiencies and lower consumer complaints.
"We don't just appoint a company a Select Supplier and walk away," Bottel said. "The program is an ongoing partnership of communications and training to reach both Campbell's objectives and our suppliers' objectives which are continuous high quality and productivity improvement."
To be named a Select Supplier, companies must progress through a rigid three-level program that requires them to make the grade of Qualified Supplier, and then to achieve the rank of Preferred Supplier.
Qualified Suppliers must be financially sound, committed to quality, and able to produce the material or ingredient that the soup company needs. USS-POSCO was named a Qualified Supplier in 1990.
It achieved Preferred Supplier status in 1991, when it demonstrated its use of objective evaluation methods and statistical process controls, and made a commitment to just-in-time manufacturing and preventative maintenance programs.
To reach the highest level, that of Select Supplier, companies must demonstrate consistent quality and service performance over time. Employee involvement in quality management and company corporate citizenship are also considerations.
Campbell Soup Co. uses USS-POSCO's tin-finished steel to package its condensed soups, Franco American spaghetti and gravy products, and its V-8 vegetable juices.
USS-POSCO Industries is a California general partnership, the partners of which are Pitcal Inc., a direct wholly owned subsidiary of USX Corporation and POSCO -- America Corp., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Phohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., of the Republic of Korea. SELECT SUPPLIER AWARD FACT SHEET What is the Select Supplier Award program?
