USAIR TO SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASE ST. LOUIS SERVICE IN MARCH

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir today announced a substantial increase in its jet service at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, adding 10 more flights March 2 and giving local travelers enhanced access to USAir's flight network.
USAir will offer three daily nonstops to New York's LaGuardia Airport, four to Kansas City International, one to Orlando International Airport and two to Baltimore/Washington International Airport, a major USAir connecting hub. (See following schedule.)
These new flights, added to three new USAir jet flights to Washington's National Airport set to begin Feb. 1, will bring USAir's total daily jet departure count at St. Louis to 23, up from 10 daily departures on Jan. 1 of this year.
"This new service will provide St. Louis area business and leisure travelers with greater access to the vast USAir system, including key business markets in the Eastern United States," said W. Thomas Lagow, USAir's executive vice president-marketing, at a press conference here today.
Lagow also said: "This new service will increase competition by giving consumers more flight options when making air travel decisions. USAir selected these markets because they have excellent potential for generating additional traffic for the USAir system. We have been working with the local community to develop new flight opportunities at St. Louis."
Airport Director Donald W. Bennett said: "The doubling of service by USAir shows what a vital market the St. Louis area provides to the airline industry. USAir's additional service is a positive indication of their strong commitment in providing better air service to the St. Louis metropolitan area. Nearly 60 percent of the St. Louis market is origination and destination traffic which is a key point in attracting additional air service."
USAir is the largest carrier in terms of flight departures at New York's LaGuardia Airport, the second largest carrier at Orlando and has a major presence at Kansas City International. Baltimore/Washington International Airport is a major hub for USAir, with 88 daily jet and 104 daily USAir Express departures, including nonstop service to London's Gatwick Airport.
USAir contributes $6.8 million annually to the local St. Louis economy for salaries, fuel, catering, space rental and other expenditures. The new flights will significantly increase that total.
USAir currently operates from three gates on Concourse A at St. Louis and will handle the new service from these existing facilities.
Currently employing 54 personnel at Lambert St. Louis International Airport, USAir will add 38 customer service employees to service the new flights. These positions will be filled by existing USAir customer service personnel transferred from other cities or furloughed USAir customer service agents.
