USAIR SHUTTLE CELEBRATES FIRST BIRTHDAY

JACKSON HEIGHTS, N.Y., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The USAir Shuttle, which provides hourly service between Washington, D.C., and New York, and New York and Boston, celebrates its first birthday today.
"As the USAir Shuttle enters its second year of operation, we celebrate the progress we have made in enhancing service for shuttle passengers and helping to return the company to profitability," said Gordon Linkon, USAir Shuttle president and CEO.
Linkon cited the following highlights of the USAir Shuttle's first year of operation:
-- A management agreement that provides positive cost benefits to the shuttle. For example, the Shuttle no longer staffs and administers functions such as reservations and sales and marketing, as these are handled by USAir.
-- Increased passenger comfort as seats were removed last summer on all USAir Shuttle aircraft to provide more legroom.
-- Expansion of leisure passenger markets, such as tour groups, seniors, youth and weekend travelers. The USAir Shuttle last summer introduced a fare program to make travel more attractive for these groups. The program has been very popular and has brought added revenue to the Shuttle operation.
-- Building of customer loyalty through the USAir Frequent Traveler Program. Many USAir FTP members now fly the Shuttle, and many long-time Shuttle passengers have joined FTP.
-- Opening of the new USAir Terminal at New York's LaGuardia Airport, giving USAir, USAir Express and the USAir Shuttle a contiguous operation. The number of Shuttle passengers making connections to other USAir flights have more than tripled in the past year.
Linkon emphasized that "much of the USAir Shuttle's success over the past year is directly attributable to our employees, who know our customers and serve them well. I can't say enough about the contribution of these very senior level people who have worked the Shuttle for many years."
The USAir Shuttle is owned by a group of banks, and operated under a management agreement with USAir. The operation was previously the Trump Shuttle, and prior to that the Eastern Shuttle.
