USAIR OPENS NEW MAINTENANCE FACILITY AT TAMPA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

TAMPA, Fla., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir today enhanced its commitment to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area with the official opening of a new $27 million maintenance facility at Tampa International Airport.
The new facility will service many of the aircraft assigned to the USAir Florida Shuttle operation that was introduced on Feb. 1 of this year and for which Tampa is a key connecting point.
 The new facility features:
-- 130,000 square feet of space, of which 87,000 square feet is a hangar bay capable of simultaneously housing one Boeing 767-200 wide- body jet and two narrow-body MD-80 or 737-300 jets.
-- Space on the adjacent ramp to park an additional four narrow-body aircraft.
-- Administrative offices and support shops to service primary aircraft components like engines, avionics, electrical systems and hydraulics, as well as ground equipment.
Ground was broken on the construction of the new facility in March 1992 and USAir took occupancy earlier this month.
USAir's Tampa maintenance staff increased from 110 to 275 with the opening of the new facility and is expected to grow even more in the future as USAir continues to expand its presence in Florida and the Southeast.
USAir and its USAir Express affiliates operate 110 daily flight departures at Tampa International, more than any other carrier. In 1992 these flights served more than 1.5 million passengers.
Approximately 400 people are employed locally by USAir. Their salaries, along with goods and services purchased by USAir and taxes paid, account for an annual contribution by the airline to the local economy of about $58 million.
