USAIR FILES WITH DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO FLY FROM PHILADELPHIA AND TAMPA TO MEXICO CITY

ARLINGTON, Va., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir today filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to begin new, nonstop Philadelphia-to-Mexico City and Tampa-to-Mexico City service, effective as early as Aug. 1, 1993.
USAir plans to operate one daily roundtrip in each market, using Boeing 757-200 aircraft on the Philadelphia route and Boeing 727-200 on the Tampa route.
"These will be USAir's first routes to Mexico, and we are delighted to move forward in bringing this new international service to our customers," said Robert L. Fornaro, USAir's senior vice president- planning.
"Mexico City generates a strong amount of business traffic to and from the United States," he emphasized. "We plan to tap that market by linking Mexico's capital city to two of our strongest business travel airports -- the USAir Philadelphia hub and Tampa, where USAir has its largest Florida operation including hourly USAir Florida Shuttle service to Miami. The new flights will also be attractive to leisure travelers."
Fornaro emphasized that no airline, U.S. or Mexican, offers nonstop flights in the Philadelphia or Tampa-to-Mexico City markets, and that approval of the application was clearly in the public interest.
USAir said its application is within the scope of recent amendments to the Air Transport Agreement between the United States and Mexico. USAir requested prompt DOT action to allow the airline to begin promoting, taking reservations and selling seats well in advance of the proposed inauguration of service.
USAir is the largest carrier in terms of jet departures at both Philadelphia International Airport and Tampa International Airport. Through its Philadelphia hub, USAir operates 302 nonstop USAir and USAir Express departures to 77 cities. At Tampa, USAir serves 24 destinations with 98 daily USAir and USAir Express flights, many of which are USAir Florida Shuttle flights.
