USAIR EXPRESS TO EXPAND SERVICE AT CHARLOTTESVILLE, REPLACE USAIR JET SERVICE TO CHARLOTTE

USAIR EXPRESS TO EXPAND SERVICE AT CHARLOTTESVILLE,
REPLACE USAIR JET SERVICE TO CHARLOTTE
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir Express will substantially expand service at Charlottesville by increasing flights from 15 to 19 on June 1. USAir Express roundtrips to USAir's major hub at Charlotte will increase from four to seven and roundtrips to the Baltimore/Washington International Airport hub will increase from three to four roundtrips.
This new pattern of service by USAir Express will replace three USAir jet roundtrips currently operating from Charlottesville to Charlotte. The jet service will be reduced to two departures in May and will be discontinued June 1.
With the June changes, USAir Express will offer an excellent pattern of service with greater frequency to several of USAir's hub airports which is important to business travelers. USAir Express will continue its popular nonstop route from Charlottesville to New York's LaGuardia Airport.
In addition, USAir Express has timed the two early morning flights to Charlotte to arrive at optimum times for passengers to conveniently connect to other USAir or USAir Express flights, an improvement over the current schedule.
The June 1 schedule will provide:
-- Seven daily roundtrips to USAir's Charlotte hub airport: An addition of two nonstop roundtrips and one one-stop roundtrip from the current four flights will become effective June 1. The one-stop flight is temporary and will become a nonstop on July 1.
-- Four daily roundtrips to USAir's Baltimore/Washington International hub airport: An addition of one nonstop roundtrip will become effective May 1. This is an increase of one flight from the current level of three roundtrips to BWI.
-- Six daily roundtrips to USAir's Pittsburgh hub airport: The same level as currently offered.
-- One daily roundtrip to New York's LaGuardia Airport: The same level as currently offered. This is even more attractive as USAir/USAir Express will increase its total operation by 21 percent at LaGuardia on May 1 -- giving local Charlottesville travelers more connecting choices to points in New York state and New England.
-- Two daily roundtrips to Lynchburg: The same level as currently offered.
USAir flights are being discontinued at Charlottesville because the average number of passengers per jet departure was only 32 -- not a profitable operation for the 63-seat or 68-seat aircraft that serve Charlottesville.
The USAir Express aircraft will better match market capacity with demand and maintain a high-frequency pattern of service important to local travelers.
Total seats available in the Charlottesville market with the additional USAir Express flights will be 642 on June 1, compared to a current seat level of 685.
Existing USAir Express service at Charlottesville is provided by two carriers -- Henson Aviation, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of USAir's parent firm, USAir Group (NYSE: U), and Chautauqua Airlines, an independent company providing USAir Express service under a marketing agreement with USAir.
The new USAir Express flights to Charlotte and Baltimore will be operated by Henson Aviation using the high-tech, 37-passenger Boeing deHavilland DASH-8 turboprop airliners, which feature two-by-two seating on both sides of a stand-up center aisle, a lavatory and flight attendant service.
