USAIR ESTABLISHES FLORIDA PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE TO SUPPORT EXPANDED OPERATIONS

MIAMI, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir has established a regional public affairs office in Florida to support its expanded operations, and appointed H. Michael (Mike) Clark as regional director-public affairs to head the new office.
In his new position, Clark will serve as the company's liaison with state and local governments, coordinate USAir's activities in cooperation with chambers of commerce and other economic development organizations, and serve as media spokesman for USAir across Florida. He will have similar responsibilities for a region of USAir's route network comprising Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and the Caribbean where USAir is also rapidly expanding its operations.
"Given the scope of USAir's operations and investment in the state, it is important that we increase our presence in the civic, governmental and media arenas across Florida," said Patricia Goldman, senior vice president of corporate communications for USAir. "USAir has always worked diligently to be a good, active corporate citizen in each of the states and communities we serve. By establishing a full-time public affairs office in Florida, we are emphasizing our commitment to that citizenship."
Over the past two years, USAir has dramatically increased the size and scope of its Florida operations. It now provides more departures from more Florida airports than any other carrier. In February 1993, it launched the USAir Florida Shuttle, encompassing 310 daily intra-state flights operated by USAir and its USAir Express partner airlines. Also in February, it inaugurated hourly flight patterns all day between Miami and Orlando and Miami and Tampa.
USAir has more flight departures than any other airline in eight of the 19 Florida airports it serves, including Tampa, Jacksonville and Tallahassee, and is a strong number two at all others, including Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The airline also provides more nonstop flights between Florida and the major northeastern cities than any other airline. More than one-fourth of the company's total systemwide available seat miles are allocated to flights to, from and within Florida.
Clark served as director of public relations for National Airlines and Pan American World Airways in Miami from 1974 to 1987, when he joined USAir's 1989 merger partner Piedmont Airlines. He is relocating to Miami from USAir headquarters in Arlington, Va., to open the new office. He has been director of community relations for USAir since 1989.
USAir's new public affairs office is just west of Miami International Airport at 7200 N.W. 19th St., Miami, FL, 33126; phone 305-477-4810, and fax 305-477-4978.
