USAIR, ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS TO LAUNCH PITTSBURGH-TOKYO CONNECTING SERVICE

USAIR, ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS TO LAUNCH PITTSBURGH-TOKYO CONNECTING SERVICE
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir and All Nippon Airways (ANA) will begin one-stop service between the new Pittsburgh International Airport and Tokyo's Narita Airport on Nov. 1 via a connection at Dulles International Airport in Washington.
"The new service offers a competitive and convenient trip between western Pennsylvania and Japan," said James Sikorsky, USAir director of interline/industry sales.
Among the benefits the new connections offer are: baggage handling in both directions, a special transfer position at Dulles staffed by USAir and ANA personnel, and convenient departure and arrival times. First class and Club ANA passengers receive use of the USAir clubs in Pittsburgh.
"We believe this new service also will be of great interest to travelers going beyond Tokyo and Japan. At Tokyo, passengers can connect to ANA's service to 30 cities within Japan as well as to our international service to cities including Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, Beijing and Sydney," said Koji Yamashita, vice president and general manager-Americas for ANA.
"Pittsburgh-originating passengers will be pleased to discover that they will arrive and connect in Tokyo at Narita Airport's new Terminal 2, which opens Dec. 6. It will be the most modern airport in Asia and the equal, I believe, of the beautiful new facility at Pittsburgh," he added.
The Pittsburgh-Tokyo service will operate daily except Tuesdays and Saturdays. USAir flight 172 departs Pittsburgh at 8:30 a.m. and arrives at Dulles at 9:25 a.m. ANA flight 001 for Tokyo leaves between 10:45 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. (times are determined by arrival slot availability in Narita) and arrives in Tokyo the next day between 3 and 4 p.m.
On the return, ANA flight 002 from Tokyo leaves at 11 a.m. daily, except Tuesdays and Saturdays, arriving at Dulles at 9:30 a.m. the same day. USAir flight 585 departs Washington at 11 a.m. and arrives in Pittsburgh at 11:54 a.m. Passengers will complete customs and immigration formalities at Dulles.
ANA will operate Boeing 747-400 equipment on the route. USAir will operate either DC-9 or F-28 aircraft on the flights to Dulles. In addition to its Washington-Tokyo service, ANA also serves New York, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
Since 1990, USAir and ANA have operated a similar flight connecting Orlando, Fla., to ANA's Washington-Tokyo service. The carriers also have announced a Nov. 1 start of a Charlotte-Tokyo connection similar to the Pittsburgh service. In addition to the new and existing connections at Dulles, ANA also participates in the USAir Frequent Traveler Program.
ANA is Japan's largest and the world's seventh largest airline. In fiscal 1991-92, ANA transported 34.9 million passengers on its flights to 30 cities in Japan and 19 cities overseas. In 1990, ANA received the prestigious Passenger Service Award from Air Transport World magazine.
USAir provides service to over 200 cities. Over 5,000 daily jet and commuter flights link 40 U.S. states and six overseas destinations including Great Britain, France, Germany, Canada, the Bahamas and Bermuda. USAir carried more than 55 million passengers in 1991. Pittsburgh is USAir's largest hub, with approximately 500 daily departures.
