USAID, HEC to launch centers for advanced studies.

ISLAMABAD -- The USAID and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Friday announced collaboration in establishment of launching centers for advanced studies in food security and agriculture, water and energy.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on behalf of USAID by Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator USAID and on behalf of HEC by Dr. Javed Leghari, the Chairperson of the HEC.

USAID and HEC expanding collaborative efforts in the field of higher education as four launching centers would be established in leading universities of the country. The launching centre for advanced studies in Food security and Agriculture would be established at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.

Similarly centers for advanced studies in the field of Water at energy would be established at University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro and National University of Science and Technology, Islamabad with satellite centre at the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar respectively.

Speaking at the occasion Dr. Leghari said that the centers for advanced studies in Food security and Agriculture, Water and Energy would bring together the best minds in academia, government and the business community.

He said the program will equip the centers to provide promising students with scholarships, support applied research, improve qualification and research opportunities of faculty.

"I am confident that this program would continue to exhibit the same success as observed in other projects being executed in collaboration with USAID, "he added.

The Administrator USAID Dr. Rajiv Shah said that these centers for advanced studies would strengthen the capacity of Pakistan's own scientists and research students to harness the power of science and technology. He said that these centers would accelerate Pakistan's progress in the priority areas of food security/agriculture, water and energy.

The 10-year project will be implemented in two phases: (1) 2012-2017 and (2) 2018-2023, where each phase is subject to availability of US funding. The phase 2 is also subject to measurable results and significant impacts achieved in phase 1 and will be based on a midterm evaluation.

American ambassador in Pakistan Cameron Munter, Vice Chancellors of the partner universities and a number of students joined the MoU signing ceremony. The partner universities also joined the ceremony through video conference.

Meanwhile, Dr. Leghari presented shield on behalf of HEC to the ambassador Munter and administrator Dr. Shah.
