USAF AWARDS NEW DATA LINK CONTRACT
                   TO UNISYS DEFENSE SYSTEMS TEAM
MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Defense Systems, Inc. (NYSE: UIS) has been awarded one of two parallel competitive contracts for the development of a new data link communication system. The contract award was issued by the U.S. Air Force and will be implemented through the company's Communication Systems Division (CSD) in Salt Lake City.
The Intra-Flight Data Link (IFDL) program, sponsored by the Avionics Directorate, Wright Laboratories, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, will provide the U.S. military with new capabilities to transfer data between aircraft in flight.
Unisys Defense Systems has teamed with TRW Military and Avionics Division, San Diego, to work on the initial design and development phase of the IFDL program. The Air Force will down-select in 1992 to a single contractor for the subsequent phases of the five-year program, which could exceed $12 million. The award marks the evolution of the company's data-link technology into a new communication application to be used on current and next-generation tactical aircraft. The contract also uses new microelectronic technologies currently under development at Unisys Defense Systems to provide increased performance in smaller, lighter and more reliable hardware packages.
Frederick F. Jenny, president of Unisys Defense Systems, Inc., said, "The IFDL is a unique opportunity to further implement a strategic thrust initiated several years ago to provide Unisys Defense Systems with an entry into network communications. Network communications is a related expansion market from our current wideband secure communication niche that also utilizes our core technology and business base. We believe that by performing on this contract and winning the down-select we will position Unisys Defense Systems to provide solutions to additional emerging customer requirements for more capable, more mobile and more affordable military communications."
Unisys Defense Systems, Inc., headquartered in McLean, is a $2.2 billion information systems company with 17,000 employees. The Company is an experienced leader in complex systems integration, custom electronic products and related professional services for the Department of Defense, other U.S. government agencies, Canada and foreign governments throughout the world.
