USAA Names Senior Vice President.
Before joining USAA, she was vice president of strategic communications for Associates First Capital Corp. Before that, she served as director of corporate communications for Kimberly-Clark Corp. Strong also had served as director of public relations and advertising for Rosewood Hotels and Resorts and worked for two public-relations agencies--Hill & Knowlton and Halt & Associates.
New York Life International Taps 2
New York Life International, the overseas arm of New York Life Insurance Co., has made the following appointments:
* Cynthia Y. Valko, who had been executive vice president since 1999, was named to the position of chief operating officer; and
* Thomas F. Flournoy III was named chief of international agency operations.
Before joining New York Life in 1998, Valko began her career at Aetna Life & Casualty as an underwriter in 1976.
Flournoy will oversee development of New York Life International's growing agency force, which currently includes more than 10,000 agents throughout Asia and Latin America. He will continue to serve as agent consultant and as a member of the executive management committee, in addition to continuing as an active agent. Flournoy spent more than 35 years with New York Life as an agent, finally moving to New York Life's home office and assuming his position as consultant in September 1996.
Penn Mutual Hires Ralph Crews
Ralph L. Crews has joined Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co., Horsham, Pa., as senior vice president of its career agency system, responsible for overall sales growth and operations.
Crews, who has more than 27 years of experience, served most recently as senior vice president in the individual financial-services group at Prudential Insurance Company of America. Crews joined Prudential in 1974 as a sales management trainee and was promoted several times through the 1980s and 1990s. During the past eight years with Prudential, his responsibilities included oversight of regional and territorial sales operations.
Atlanta Life Names Chairman
The Atlanta Life Insurance Co.'s board of directors has named William A. "Bill" Clement chairman. After serving as vice chairman since 1996, Clement succeeds Gregory Baranco, who was chairman for seven years.
Clement is chairman and chief executive officer of Dobbs, Ram & Co., an Atlanta-based systems-integration company. He is the former chairman and co-founding stockholder of the Clement Insurance Group Inc., an insurance brokerage firm.
Kemper Surety Taps President
Kemper Insurance Cos., Long Grove, III., has named industry veteran Charles Brian Schmalz president of Kemper Surety.
Schmalz joins Kemper with more than 30 years of surety experience, including 20 years at Reliance Surety, where he most recently was president and chief executive officer. Reliance Surety was sold to Travelers Property Casualty Corp. in early 2000.
Before joining Reliance in 1980, Schmalz was with Seaboard Surety for 10 years. He is a former chairman of the Surety Association of America, and he previously served on the steering committee of the Surety Information Office.
