USA TODAY TO LAUNCH BEST SELLING BOOKS LIST

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- USA TODAY will launch its new Best Selling Books list on Oct. 28, a new national list based wholly on retail sales in bookstores.
USA TODAY's Best Selling Books will appear every Thursday in the Life section. The new list ranks the 50 top-selling books -- whether hardcover, paperback, fiction or non-fiction. Readers will be able to tell what's selling across the whole range of books, not just what is selling by category. Different book formats, such as hard cover and paperback, will be noted.
In addition to the top 50 best selling books nationwide, the page will include special features such as sublists of different category books and "insider" looks at the week's best sellers.
"This list will measure how all kinds of books really sell," said Peter S. Prichard, editor of USA TODAY. "Our top 50 will include all books, from hardcovers to mass-market paperbacks, so readers can see how hot newcomers compare to old favorites."
USA TODAY Best Selling Books is created by combining actual retail sales in the nation's largest bookstore chains and a representative sampling of independent stores. Through a computerized system, book stores will report at least 300 top sellers each week to USA TODAY.
To create the book list, USA TODAY receives sales data from the following major bookstore chains and independent stores: B. Dalton Bookseller, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million Inc., Books & Co. (Dayton); Borders Books & Music, Bookstar, Bookstop, Brentano's, Crown Books, Doubleday Book Shops, Ingram Book Company's Ibid independent subscribers, Kroch's & Brentano's Bookstores, Lauriat's and Royal Discount Book Stores, Oxford Book Stores, Schribner's Bookstore, Tattered Cover, and Waldenbooks.
USA TODAY is the only national, daily, general-interest newspaper in the country. It is printed via satellite at 32 locations across the USA and is available nationwide. USA TODAY's International Edition, printed in London, Switzerland and Hong Kong, is available in more than 90 countries worldwide.
