USA TODAY SKY RADIO ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT
WITH CNN INC., MUTUAL BROADCASTING SYSTEM
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- USA TODAY Sky Radio announced it has signed agreements with CNN Inc. and the Mutual Broadcasting System for each to supply a range of high-profile programming to its all-new live, in-flight audio service.
"Sky Radio is committed to providing the passengers of United Airlines and Delta Air Lines with top-quality programming from a variety of sources," said William O. Hider, Sky Radio president. "I'm delighted that our full-time broadcast staff now will have the resources of two of the world's best-known news organizations. The agreements with CNN and Mutual enhance Sky Radio's ability to give air travelers up-to-the-minute news, live play-by-play sports and destination-city weather information."
"These are radio's biggest shows, best sports events and most- respected news gathering organizations," said Holland Cooke, Sky Radio vice president of radio. "We'll be able to take our listeners -- live -- to wherever news is happening, across the USA and around the world."
Cooke state CNN has granted Sky Radio an exclusive license to broadcast live a range of popular programming, including a live newscast direct from CNN's newsroom in Atlanta at the top of each hour. In addition, CNN will produce destination-city weather forecasts and daily business reports exclusively for Sky Radio.
"CNN is very pleased to be affiliated with USA TODAY Sky Radio," said Jon Petrovich, CNN Radio executive vice president. "Thanks to Sky Radio, CNN's live audience will expand to include in-flight travelers -- an audience who, heretofore, didn't have access to live news."
Cooke went on to say that Sky Radio previously had reached an exclusive agreement with the Mutual Broadcasting System to broadcast "The Larry King Show," "The Jim Bohannon Show" and "America in the Morning," completing Sky Radio's around-the-clock news format. Mutual also will provide the Sunday afternoon double-header NFL football games and selected Notre Dame football Saturday games.
"We're very excited to be involved with USA TODAY Sky Radio in this innovative venture," said Jack Clements, Mutual Broadcasting System president. "Not only will mutual's exclusive live broadcasts provide a new source of talk, sports and entertainment for air travelers, it will provide added exposure for our advertisers and sponsors."
The first live, satellite-delivered, in-flight audio information service, Sky Radio will feature around-the-clock news, business, sports and weather reports on select Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flights beginning this summer. Sky Radio is headquartered in Arlington, Va., just outside of Washington.
This fall, Sky Radio plans to launch a 24-hour sports channel, giving fans up-to-the-minute sports, scores, interviews and features by some of the USA TODAY Sports section and USA TODAY Baseball Weekly writers, along with live sports play-by-play.
