US missile defence test a 'success'.

Summary: The US has fired a short-range ballistic weapon from the island of Kauai near Hawaii.

The latest US missile defence test has been deemed a success.

A short-range ballistic weapon was fired from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai, close to Honolulu, and was then shot down by the destroyer, the USS Hopper.

A video handout from the Pentagon purportedly shows the tests being carried out, although the contents can not be independently verified.

It comes as North Korea violated United Nations Security Council resolutions by sending seven ballistic missiles into waters off its east coast on July 4.

There had been speculation North Korea would launch a missile toward Hawaii, about 4,500 miles (7,240 kilometres) away, to coincide with the July 4 Independence Day holiday in the US.
