US hero shot by friendly fire.

AMERICAN football hero Pat Tillman was 'probably' killed by friendly fire, US Army chiefs said yesterday.

Pat, who walked away from a $3.6million National Football League contract to join the army after September 11 died in Afghanistan last month.

Previous military statements suggested the former NFL player died under enemy fire as he led his team of Army Rangers up a hill.

But Lt. Gen. Philip R. Kensington Jr. said in an statement: 'While there was no one specific finding of fault, investigation results indicate Cpl. Tillman probably died as a result of friendly fire while his unit was engaged in combat.'
