US decorative laminates demand to reach 15.2 billion square feet in 2007.

Sales of decorative laminates in the US are forecast to increase 4.7 percent per year to 15.2 billion square feet in 2007, valued at $6.1 billion. Gains will be driven by increases in nonresidential construction spending and residential repair and improvement spending, particularly with regard to kitchen and bath remodeling. The rapid growth of laminate flooring production in the US, an industry which began to develop in the mid-1990s, will continue to drive gains in laminate demand, outpacing other leading markets, although from a small base. These and other trends are presented in Decorative Laminates, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.

Laminates made from low pressure overlays, including low basis weight papers, saturated papers, decorative foils and vinyl films, accounted for the largest share of decorative laminate sales in 2002, with an 81-percent share of sales in volume terms. Gains through 2007 will be driven in part by technological advances that make the materials more durable. Additionally, the introduction of low pressure overlays, particularly saturated papers, made to match the patterns available on popular varieties of high pressure laminates (HPLs) will allow them to be paired more easily and more often with HPLs on the same piece.

HPLs are expected to continue to post higher annual growth through 2007. Advances will be driven by the rising popularity of laminate flooring, a market where HPLs hold a leading position, and the increasing use of HPLs paired with solid wood and other materials in furniture applications. As the most durable and impact-resistant type of laminate, HPLs continue to dominate most horizontal applications, including countertops and fixture tops.

The flooring market is projected to achieve the fastest growth through 2007, benefitting from the introduction of better performing materials and consumer interest in a low cost, low maintenance alternative to popular wood flooring. The furniture market is also expected to post above-average growth, exceeding four trillion square feet by 2007. Kitchen and bath fixtures (i.e., countertops and cabinets) will continue to account for the largest share of decorative laminates demand despite below average growth.
