US POWDER COATINGS DEMAND TO INCREASE 8% ANNUALLY THROUGH THE YEAR 2005.

Demand for powder coatings in the United States is forecast to rise nearly 8 percent per year to 505 million pounds in 2005, valued at $1.6 billion. Solid long-term growth, well in excess of both the larger US industrial coatings industry and the general economy, is primarily due to the following two factors: Powders offer significant environmental benefits compared to conventional solvent-based coatings, particularly in the area of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, which will promote ongoing displacement of non-compliant coatings. Second, suppliers are rapidly expanding the functional range of powders into wood and plastics, which is opening new applications for these coatings. These and other trends are presented in Powder Coatings, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.

Thermoset powder coatings will continue to dominate the industry due to their lower prices and good performance characteristics. Epoxies are valued for interior applications requiring good chemical resistance, while polyurethanes and polyesters dominate exterior applications such as lawn and garden equipment due to their excellent weather resistance. Arising from a small base, silicone powder coatings are expected to experience favorable growth where high heat resistance is required. While remaining a smaller segment overall, thermoplastic powder coatings will retain a significant market presence, particularly in niche applications calling for exceptional performance characteristics -- fluoropolymers, for example, exhibit the best weatherability properties of any powder coating type. Despite the favorable outlook, powders face a number of challenges, including a slowing US economy and intense functional competition from other types of environmentally compliant coatings, such as water-based formulations.

Powders will continue to find the bulk of their use in durable goods markets, including motor vehicles, appliances and housewares, furniture, industrial machinery, and lawn and garden equipment. Motor vehicle markets continue to offer excellent long term prospects for powders, particularly in new applications such as exterior primer and clearcoats. This potential market is massive, but large scale conversion will require continuing improvements in the performance of powder coatings. Powders are experiencing expanded opportunities in furniture applications due to the development of low temperature and ultraviolet-cured products that can be used on wood substrates.
