URBAN WALK; START: Broadmeadow Health Centre.

Byline: Graham Young visits Earlswood Christmas Market

FROM an everyday place this walk takes you off to a lovely canalside. Far from glum at winter's onset, I was pleasantly surprised to access a wonderful little canal towpath and escape the traffic. I didn't take this walk in order to explore fabulous architecture, intriguing history or natural beauty. I took the walk because it is a perfectly decent walk from the Broadmeadow Health Centre, Keynell Covert, Kings Norton, B30 3QT, where they no doubt advise many of their users to walk more in their everyday lives in order to feel fitter, healthier and live longer. It is an absolute pleasure to be outside, breathing fresh air, something we would never appreciate fully behind closed doors. So, just open that door and step outside! 1. From the entrance to the Health Centre, turn left and left again on to Monyhull Hall Road. 2. Cross at the pedestrian lights and continue past McDonald's and down Parsons Hill. 3. Take the slip road on the right. 4. Turn right into Baldwins Road. 5. Just before No. 79, turn left along the pathway. 6. Enter park and take muddy path left down to the canalside. 7. Turn back and retrace steps to Parsons Hill and either turn left and retrace back to start, or turn right. 8. As it becomes Wharf Road, take the entrance on your right down to the canal tow path. 9. If you continue ahead you will see where you have just been on the opposite side. 10. Retrace steps back to start. DURATION: 40 minutes.
