UPS TRUCK LEASING, SOUTHERN BELL TELEPHONE PIONEERS
FORM ALLIANCE TO ASSIST FLORIDA HURRICANE VICTIMS
ATLANTA, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The winds of Hurricane Andrew were still sweeping across the Florida coastline when the Southern Bell Georgia Telephone

Pioneers and UPS Truck Leasing, a United Parcel Service company, began working together on a disaster relief plan.
The Telephone Pioneers, an organization of active and retired Southern Bell employees, began Tuesday to collect items such as bottled water, canned foods, baby food, disposable diapers, clothing, shoes, pillows and blankets. On Friday, Aug. 28, they'll load all items on a 48-foot tractor trailer donated by UPS Truck Leasing in Atlanta. UPS is also providing all fuel and insurance for the truck. Volunteer truck driver Ben Cook will drive the truck to the Telephone Pioneer headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, where distribution will begin Saturday.
"We just want to do what we can to help the people in Florida," said Larry Stalnaker, city manager for UPS Truck Leasing.
Carmell Dean, administrator for the Dogwood chapter of the Telephone Pioneers, said that everything in the disaster relief plan has come together because of the alliance between the two companies.
"We have such enthusiastic volunteers that we knew we'd have a truckload of supplies by Friday. We were wondering 'How will we get them to Florida?'" explained Dean. "It only took one phone call to UPS Truck Leasing, and we were set with a truck. Like pennies from heaven."
The Telephone Pioneers will load all supplies on the truck between 10 a.m. and noon Friday at Southern Bell, 100 Perimeter Center Place, Atlanta. Anyone wishing to donate items for this effort should call the Pioneer office at 404-391-2680.
