UPS SELECTS ROLLS-ROYCE FOR NEW BOEING 757s
RESTON, Va., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- United Parcel Service has

chosen Rolls-Royce RB211-535 engines to power 20 757 aircraft it had previously ordered from Boeing. Deliveries of the Rolls-Royce- powered aircraft will begin in 1994 and continue through 1997.
UPS, the world's largest package and document delivery company, based in the United States, has options for an additional 41 aircraft also powered by the 535 engine. If all options are exercised, deliveries could continue through 2001.
The potential value of business to Rolls-Royce in installed and spare engines is more than $900 million. The 535 is rated at 43,100 pounds of thrust.
UPS becomes the 36th carrier to operate the twin-engine 757 with the Rolls-Royce powerplant. It will also become the sixth U.S. operator.
The deal brings the total number of RB211-powered 757s delivered and on order to 438.
Rolls-Royce is also supplying Tay engines to refit the UPS fleet of Boeing 727-100s. Up to 80 trijets may be re-engined with the 15,100-pounds-of-thrust Tay 651, significantly improving noise and emissions levels and giving UPS greater flexibility in noise- sensitive, night-time operations. The first seven engines for the re-engining program have already been delivered.
Rolls-Royce, through its main Aerospace and Industrial Power Groups, is a world leader in gas turbine engines for aviation, marine and industrial use; material handling equipment; and services to the nuclear power industry.
