UPS REPORTS FIRST QUARTER AIR VOLUME RESULTS; GROWTH REQUIRES FLEET EXPANSION

ATLANTA, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- UPS today announced double-digit air volume growth continued through the first quarter of 1994 for both domestic and international air service. To support that growth, UPS will add 23 aircraft to its fleet this year, at a total cost of more than $600 million.
For the first quarter of 1994, UPS air volume averaged 1.13 million pieces per day, up 20.3 percent over 1993's first quarter. The growth was led by UPS's international air volume, up 36.7 percent for the quarter. Domestic air volume grew 19.3 percent over last year's first quarter.
"We attribute our record performance to the service and technological enhancements we made last year, including the introduction of on-line package tracking, shortened transit times for international letters and documents, and the large-scale deployment of UPS drop boxes," said John Alden, UPS senior vice president for business development.
In February, UPS acquired six 727-110s, all of which are in service. In May and June, UPS will put three more 747-100s and two DC-8-73s in service, and in July, will take delivery on the first of twelve 757 package freighters scheduled to go on-line in 1994.
The additions will bring UPS's fleet to 219 jet freighters either operating or on order, with another 302 leased aircraft. UPS operates one of the largest air cargo fleets in the world, flying more than 1,500 flight segments per day into 610 airports worldwide.
With $17.8 billion in revenues and delivery volume of 2.94 billion packages in 1993, UPS is the world's largest package distribution company.
