UPS PARTNERS WITH MOBILITY CANDA TO EXPAND CELLULAR DATA NETWORK TO CANADA

ATLANTA, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- United Parcel Service (UPS) today is activating Canada's first nationwide cellular data transfer network, enabling customers to receive immediate shipment status information. UPS created the cellular system in a strategic alliance with Mobility Canada, a corporation formed by BCE Mobile Communications and Bell Mobility Cellular.
UPS, the only parcel delivery company able to digitally capture both package information and the customer's signature through a custom-built hand-held computer called the DIAD (Digital Information Acquisition Device), introduced its cellular technology in the United States in February at an initial cost of $150 million. UPS chose cellular because it provides the most extensive geographic coverage, the highest reliability and the best potential for future upgrades.
"Over the last several years we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in advancing our tracking capabilities to meet customer demand," said Douglas C. Fields, UPS vice president of telecommunications. "Service between Canada and the U.S. is one of our most important growth areas, and providing this tracking capability is a critical competitive step."
