UPJOHN TO SUE HALCION CRITIC

 UPJOHN TO SUE HALCION CRITIC
KALAMAZOO, Mich., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to charges

reported in an article about Halcion Tablets in this morning's New York Times, Dr. Theodore Cooper, M.D., Ph.D., chairman and chief executive officer of The Upjohn Company (NYSE: UPJ), issued the following statement:
"Upjohn plans to bring suit against Dr. Ian Oswald as soon as possible. These repeated false and reckless charges of fraudulent concealment by Dr. Oswald cannot and will not be condoned. Dr. Oswald's tactics have deprived millions of individuals of a safe, effective and well-tolerated sleep medicine, one whose advantages have led it to become the most widely accepted and prescribed medication of its kind in the world.
"We can only guess at Dr. Oswald's motives for these attacks, which have continued over a period of years, but the fact is that he is wrong. He has misled the New York Times in the same way that he has misled other reporters and regulatory agencies around the world.
"We've been caring for patients now for more than a century, and it's not fair for our employees to continue to be smeared by Oswald or for patients to be frightened and misled by this kind of junk science."
The Upjohn Company is a worldwide, research-based provider of human health care products, animal health products, agronomic and vegetable seeds and specialty chemicals. Headquartered in Kalamazoo, the company has been dedicated to improving health and nutrition for more than a century.
