UPJOHN TO DEFEND AND INDEMNIFY PHYSICIANS WHO PRESCRIBE HALCION
KALAMAZOO, Mich., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Upjohn Company (NYSE: UPJ) announced today that it has introduced a program to defend and indemnify U.S. physicians named in lawsuits involving damages allegedly caused by Halcion Tablets, if the doctor prescribed Halcion in accordance with the package insert. Halcion is the most widely used prescription sleeping medication in the world.
"We've taken this step to reemphasize our support for Halcion and the physicians who prescribe it," said Upjohn's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Theodore Cooper, M.D., Ph.D. "This product is safe and effective when it's used as recommended."
The target of intense media attention in recent months, Halcion was suspended from marketing in the United Kingdom, Norway and Finland in early October; Upjohn is currently appealing those decisions. A working group appointed by the European Community (EC) is now reviewing Halcion data and will make recommendations regarding Halcion use to EC member countries in December. On Nov. 18, Upjohn announced that, following discussions with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it plans to introduce in the United States a new 10-tablet package, a patient package insert and certain changes in the physician package insert for Halcion.
Cooper pointed out that negative media stories may have caused some patients to question the safety of Halcion. "It's tragic if a patient who can benefit from this product is frightened by sensational media stories. A patient who has concerns about Halcion or any other prescription medication needs to talk to the doctor. Patients must know that only their doctors can prescribe and evaluate the appropriate treatment for them. Upjohn supports the physicians who prescribe Halcion, and we see this program as another way to convey this message to physicians."
Upjohn announced this program in letters mailed to physicians on Nov. 26. It went into effect today.
