 UPJOHN ELECTS JERRY R. MITCHELL TO BOARD
 KALAMAZOO, Mich., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Upjohn Company


(NYSE: UPJ) today announced the election of Jerry R. Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president and president, Upjohn Laboratories, to the company's board of directors.
 Mitchell, 50, joined the company in 1989 as vice president for Pharmaceutical Research. He became senior vice president and president, Upjohn Laboratories, in April 1990 and was promoted to executive vice president in January 1991.
 Mitchell received a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Kentucky in 1963, and an M.D. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1968 and 1969, respectively.
 Before joining The Upjohn Company, Mitchell served as director, Center for Experimental Therapeutics, Baylor College of Medicine and Affiliate Hospitals, Houston. He was professor of medicine at Baylor College from 1977-89. Prior to that, he spent seven years in increasingly important research and administrative positions at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
 During his career, Mitchell has served on a number of national advisory boards and committees, including the Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee, Food and Drug Administration, 1977-79; Pharmacological Sciences Review Committee, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, 1980-84; and the Pharmacology Study Section, National Institute of Health, 1985-89.
 Mitchell has received numerous honors and special scientific recognition, including receipt in 1977 of the John Jacob Abel Award for outstanding research in pharmacology, given annually by the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. In 1990, he was named a "Citation Superstar" by the Institute for Scientific Information in The Scientist newspaper, with a ranking of 151 overall among all scientists and 17th among pharmaceutical scientists.
