Toyota Motor Corp. on Friday launched new models of its popular Corolla sedan and station wagon domestically.
The 11th models since the vehicle's launch in 1966 have been downsized compared with existing ones so elderly people can easily drive them even in small alleys and parking lots.
They also feature better fuel efficiency, the automaker said.
Toyota set its monthly sales target at 3,000 units for the Axio sedan at a suggested retail price of 1.36 million yen to 2.09 million yen, while for the Fielder station wagon, it aims to sell 4,000 units per month for between 1.52 million yen to 2.12 million yen.
It was the first complete remodeling of the Corolla since October 2006, according to Toyota.
''We've realized the ultimate form of a Japanese compact car'' with improved safety features and comfortableness, said Toyota President Akio Toyoda at a press conference.
The models -- 1300 cc and 1500 cc versions for the Axio and 1500 cc and 1800 cc versions for the Fielder -- will be manufactured at a plant of Toyota subsidiary Central Motor Co. in Ohira, Miyagi Prefecture. Toyota has designated the Tohoku region as its third major domestic manufacturing base following the Chubu and Kyushu regions.
