UPDATE; Duff strike for Smith.

Cumbernauld's Hugh Duff stayed on course for the World Indoor title with a 7- 6, 7-5, 7-4 win over former UK champion Gary Smith in Preston.

But East Lothian's Graham Robertson crashed out 7-5, 2-7, 7-5, 5-7, 7- 5 to England's Wynne Richards.

Robertson said: "I couldn't get into it. I had great chances and didn't take them."

In the pairs, holders Richard Corsie and Alex Marshall had a 7-2, 6-7, 7- 2, 7-4 win over Wayne Letman and Phil Rowlands.

England's Greg Harlow defeated Guernsey's Adrian Welch in four sets and Irish pair Roy Battersby and David Corkill beat England's Stuart Airey and David Taylor also in four sets.

ATHLETICS: Frankie Fredericks became the first man to break the 20- second barrier for the indoor 200m. His devastating 19.92 in France smashed Brit Linford Christie's 20.25 mark.

ICE HOCKEY: Canadian Chris Palmer fired a treble as Fife Flyers took a major step towards the British Championship play-offs with a 7-3 away win over Newcastle Warriors.
